Today, Feb. 14th, as I began to type a Facebook message to my family and friends, I paused as I began to type and stopped and thought. The cards, the advertisements, and all the sentiments of the day are saying, “Valentine’s Day”. Yet I remember when I was a child it was called, “St. Valentine’s Day”. All the cards and decorations said St. Valentine’s Day. In the 5th century, Pope Gelasius declared Feb. 14th to be St. Valentine’s Day.
Is this an example of the secularization of yet another holiday? Let’s consider this a little more, do you say Patrick’s Day or is it still St. Patrick’s Day or might that holiday be in danger too!
So as you are enjoying this holiday today, let’s remember to keep the Saint in the holiday and wish people, “Happy St. Valentine’s Day!
